roller chain

Are roller chains suitable for high-speed applications?

Roller chains are commonly used in a wide range of applications, including high-speed applications. Here’s a detailed answer to the question:

1. Robust Design: Roller chains are designed to withstand high-speed operation. They are constructed using high-quality materials and undergo precision manufacturing processes to ensure strength, durability, and reliability. The design includes features such as hardened pins, solid rollers, and precision bushings, which contribute to their ability to handle high speeds.

2. Efficient Power Transmission: Roller chains provide efficient power transmission at high speeds. The smooth engagement between the chain and the sprockets allows for minimal energy loss, ensuring effective transfer of power from the driving sprocket to the driven sprocket. This is particularly important in high-speed applications where efficiency is crucial.

3. Lubrication and Heat Dissipation: Proper lubrication is essential for the smooth operation of roller chains at high speeds. Lubrication reduces friction and heat generation, which can occur during high-speed operation. The lubricant helps to minimize wear, reduce noise, and dissipate heat, ensuring the chain operates within its optimal temperature range.

4. Dynamic Balance: Roller chains are designed to maintain dynamic balance during high-speed rotation. The symmetrical design and uniform weight distribution of the chain links and rollers help minimize vibration and reduce the risk of chain jump or derailment. This promotes stable and reliable performance, even at high speeds.

It is important to select the appropriate type and size of roller chain for a specific high-speed application, considering factors such as the required load capacity, speed, environmental conditions, and lubrication requirements. Regular maintenance, including proper lubrication, tension adjustment, and inspection of the chain and sprockets, is also crucial to ensure safe and reliable operation at high speeds.

Can roller chains be used for power transmission in construction equipment?

Roller chains can indeed be used for power transmission in construction equipment. Here’s a detailed answer to the question:

Construction equipment often requires a reliable and robust power transmission system to handle heavy loads and operate in demanding environments. Roller chains offer several advantages that make them well-suited for power transmission in construction equipment:

1. High Strength: Roller chains are designed to withstand high tensile and impact loads, making them suitable for the heavy-duty requirements of construction equipment. They are capable of transmitting substantial power without deformation or failure.

2. Durability: Construction sites can expose equipment to harsh conditions such as dust, debris, and vibrations. Roller chains are built to be durable and resistant to these challenging environments. They are constructed from high-quality materials and undergo heat treatment processes to enhance their strength and wear resistance.

3. Versatility: Roller chains can be used in various construction equipment applications, including excavators, loaders, bulldozers, cranes, and concrete mixers. They can efficiently transmit power from the engine to different components such as wheels, tracks, and attachments, allowing the equipment to perform a wide range of tasks.

4. Cost-Effectiveness: Roller chains offer a cost-effective solution for power transmission in construction equipment. They have a relatively low initial cost compared to alternative systems, and their durability and long service life contribute to lower maintenance and replacement costs over time.

5. Easy Installation and Maintenance: Roller chains are easy to install and maintain, requiring regular lubrication and periodic inspection for wear and proper tension. Maintenance tasks can be performed on-site, reducing downtime and increasing equipment availability.

It’s important to note that proper chain selection, sizing, and maintenance are crucial for ensuring optimal performance and longevity in construction equipment applications. Following the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations for chain installation, lubrication, and tensioning is essential to maximize the efficiency and reliability of the power transmission system.

How do you measure roller chain wear?

Measuring roller chain wear is important to determine if the chain is still within acceptable tolerances or if it needs to be replaced. Here are the steps to measure roller chain wear:

1. Chain Elongation Measurement: Chain elongation is a common form of wear in roller chains. To measure chain elongation, you’ll need a ruler or caliper with metric units and a reference length of the chain. The reference length is typically a certain number of pitches, which is the distance from one roller to the next.

2. Select Reference Points: Choose two reference points on the chain, ideally at least 10 pitches apart. These points should be accessible and free from any significant wear or damage.

3. Measure the Distance: With the chain in a relaxed state, measure the distance between the reference points. This can be done by aligning the ruler or caliper with the rollers of the chain. Ensure the measurement is taken along the same side of the chain throughout the process.

4. Compare with the Manufacturer’s Specification: Consult the manufacturer’s specification or maintenance manual to determine the allowable elongation limit. Typically, roller chains have a maximum allowable elongation of around 1-2% before replacement is recommended.

5. Calculate Elongation Percentage: Calculate the elongation percentage by comparing the measured distance with the reference length. Subtract the reference length from the measured distance, divide the result by the reference length, and multiply by 100 to get the elongation percentage.

6. Determine Chain Condition: If the elongation percentage exceeds the manufacturer’s recommended limit, it indicates significant wear and elongation of the chain. In such cases, it is advisable to replace the chain to prevent potential failure and damage to the machinery.

It’s important to note that measuring chain wear is just one aspect of assessing chain condition. Visual inspection for signs of wear, such as pin wear, plate wear, or roller wear, is also crucial. If you notice any signs of damage or wear during the inspection, it is recommended to replace the chain, regardless of the elongation measurement.

ROLLER CHAIN

Roller chain or bush roller chain is the type of chain drive most commonly used for transmission of mechanical power on many kinds of domestic, industrial and agricultural machinery, including conveyors, wire- and tube-drawing machines, printing presses, cars, motorcycles, and bicycles. It consists of a series of short cylindrical rollers held together by side links. It is driven by a toothed wheel called a sprocket. It is a simple, reliable, and efficient means of power transmission.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE CHAIN

Two different sizes of roller chain, showing construction.
There are 2 types of links alternating in the bush roller chain. The first type is inner links, having 2 inner plates held together by 2 sleeves or bushings CHINAMFG which rotate 2 rollers. Inner links alternate with the second type, the outer links, consisting of 2 outer plates held together by pins passing through the bushings of the inner links. The “bushingless” roller chain is similar in operation though not in construction; instead of separate bushings or sleeves holding the inner plates together, the plate has a tube stamped into it protruding from the hole which serves the same purpose. This has the advantage of removing 1 step in assembly of the chain.

The roller chain design reduces friction compared to simpler designs, resulting in higher efficiency and less wear. The original power transmission chain varieties lacked rollers and bushings, with both the inner and outer plates held by pins which directly contacted the sprocket teeth; however this configuration exhibited extremely rapid wear of both the sprocket teeth, and the plates where they pivoted on the pins. This problem was partially solved by the development of bushed chains, with the pins holding the outer plates passing through bushings or sleeves connecting the inner plates. This distributed the wear over a greater area; however the teeth of the sprockets still wore more rapidly than is desirable, from the sliding friction against the bushings. The addition of rollers surrounding the bushing sleeves of the chain and provided rolling contact with the teeth of the sprockets resulting in excellent resistance to wear of both sprockets and chain as well. There is even very low friction, as long as the chain is sufficiently lubricated. Continuous, clean, lubrication of roller chains is of primary importance for efficient operation as well as correct tensioning.

LUBRICATION

Many driving chains (for example, in factory equipment, or driving a camshaft inside an internal combustion engine) operate in clean environments, and thus the wearing surfaces (that is, the pins and bushings) are safe from precipitation and airborne grit, many even in a sealed environment such as an oil bath. Some roller chains are designed to have o-rings built into the space between the outside link plate and the inside roller link plates. Chain manufacturers began to include this feature in 1971 after the application was invented by Joseph Montano while working for Whitney Chain of Hartford, Connecticut. O-rings were included as a way to improve lubrication to the links of power transmission chains, a service that is vitally important to extending their working life. These rubber fixtures form a barrier that holds factory applied lubricating grease inside the pin and bushing wear areas. Further, the rubber o-rings prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering inside the chain linkages, where such particles would otherwise cause significant wear.[citation needed]

There are also many chains that have to operate in dirty conditions, and for size or operational reasons cannot be sealed. Examples include chains on farm equipment, bicycles, and chain saws. These chains will necessarily have relatively high rates of wear, particularly when the operators are prepared to accept more friction, less efficiency, more noise and more frequent replacement as they neglect lubrication and adjustment.

Many oil-based lubricants attract dirt and other particles, eventually forming an CHINAMFG paste that will compound wear on chains. This problem can be circumvented by use of a “dry” PTFE spray, which forms a solid film after application and repels both particles and moisture.

VARIANTS DESIGN

Layout of a roller chain: 1. Outer plate, 2. Inner plate, 3. Pin, 4. Bushing, 5. Roller
If the chain is not being used for a high wear application (for instance if it is just transmitting motion from a hand-operated lever to a control shaft on a machine, or a sliding door on an oven), then 1 of the simpler types of chain may still be used. Conversely, where extra strength but the smooth drive of a smaller pitch is required, the chain may be “siamesed”; instead of just 2 rows of plates on the outer sides of the chain, there may be 3 (“duplex”), 4 (“triplex”), or more rows of plates running parallel, with bushings and rollers between each adjacent pair, and the same number of rows of teeth running in parallel on the sprockets to match. Timing chains on automotive engines, for example, typically have multiple rows of plates called strands.

Roller chain is made in several sizes, the most common American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards being 40, 50, 60, and 80. The first digit(s) indicate the pitch of the chain in eighths of an inch, with the last digit being 0 for standard chain, 1 for lightweight chain, and 5 for bushed chain with no rollers. Thus, a chain with half-inch pitch would be a #40 while a #160 sprocket would have teeth spaced 2 inches apart, etc. Metric pitches are expressed in sixteenths of an inch; thus a metric #8 chain (08B-1) would be equivalent to an ANSI #40. Most roller chain is made from plain carbon or alloy steel, but stainless steel is used in food processing machinery or other places where lubrication is a problem, and nylon or brass are occasionally seen for the same reason.

Roller chain is ordinarily hooked up using a master link (also known as a connecting link), which typically has 1 pin held by a horseshoe clip rather than friction fit, allowing it to be inserted or removed with simple tools. Chain with a removable link or pin is also known as cottered chain, which allows the length of the chain to be adjusted. Half links (also known as offsets) are available and are used to increase the length of the chain by a single roller. Riveted roller chain has the master link (also known as a connecting link) “riveted” or mashed on the ends. These pins are made to be durable and are not removable.

USE

An example of 2 ‘ghost’ sprockets tensioning a triplex roller chain system
Roller chains are used in low- to mid-speed drives at around 600 to 800 feet per minute; however, at higher speeds, around 2,000 to 3,000 feet per minute, V-belts are normally used due to wear and noise issues.
A bicycle chain is a form of roller chain. Bicycle chains may have a master link, or may require a chain tool for removal and installation. A similar but larger and thus stronger chain is used on most motorcycles although it is sometimes replaced by either a toothed belt or a shaft drive, which offer lower noise level and fewer maintenance requirements.
The great majority of automobile engines use roller chains to drive the camshaft(s). Very high performance engines often use gear drive, and starting in the early 1960s toothed belts were used by some manufacturers.
Chains are also used in forklifts using hydraulic rams as a pulley to raise and lower the carriage; however, these chains are not considered roller chains, but are classified as lift or leaf chains.
Chainsaw cutting chains superficially resemble roller chains but are more closely related to leaf chains. They are driven by projecting drive links which also serve to locate the chain CHINAMFG the bar.

Sea Harrier FA.2 ZA195 front (cold) vector thrust nozzle – the nozzle is rotated by a chain drive from an air motor
A perhaps unusual use of a pair of motorcycle chains is in the Harrier Jump Jet, where a chain drive from an air motor is used to rotate the movable engine nozzles, allowing them to be pointed downwards for hovering flight, or to the rear for normal CHINAMFG flight, a system known as Thrust vectoring.

WEAR

The effect of wear on a roller chain is to increase the pitch (spacing of the links), causing the chain to grow longer. Note that this is due to wear at the pivoting pins and bushes, not from actual stretching of the metal (as does happen to some flexible steel components such as the hand-brake cable of a motor vehicle).

With modern chains it is unusual for a chain (other than that of a bicycle) to wear until it breaks, since a worn chain leads to the rapid onset of wear on the teeth of the sprockets, with ultimate failure being the loss of all the teeth on the sprocket. The sprockets (in particular the smaller of the two) suffer a grinding motion that puts a characteristic hook shape into the driven face of the teeth. (This effect is made worse by a chain improperly tensioned, but is unavoidable no matter what care is taken). The worn teeth (and chain) no longer provides smooth transmission of power and this may become evident from the noise, the vibration or (in car engines using a timing chain) the variation in ignition timing seen with a timing light. Both sprockets and chain should be replaced in these cases, since a new chain on worn sprockets will not last long. However, in less severe cases it may be possible to save the larger of the 2 sprockets, since it is always the smaller 1 that suffers the most wear. Only in very light-weight applications such as a bicycle, or in extreme cases of improper tension, will the chain normally jump off the sprockets.

The lengthening due to wear of a chain is calculated by the following formula:

M = the length of a number of links measured

S = the number of links measured

P = Pitch

In industry, it is usual to monitor the movement of the chain tensioner (whether manual or automatic) or the exact length of a drive chain (one rule of thumb is to replace a roller chain which has elongated 3% on an adjustable drive or 1.5% on a fixed-center drive). A simpler method, particularly suitable for the cycle or motorcycle user, is to attempt to pull the chain away from the larger of the 2 sprockets, whilst ensuring the chain is taut. Any significant movement (e.g. making it possible to see through a gap) probably indicates a chain worn up to and beyond the limit. Sprocket damage will result if the problem is ignored. Sprocket wear cancels this effect, and may mask chain wear.

CHAIN STRENGTH

The most common measure of roller chain’s strength is tensile strength. Tensile strength represents how much load a chain can withstand under a one-time load before breaking. Just as important as tensile strength is a chain’s fatigue strength. The critical factors in a chain’s fatigue strength is the quality of steel used to manufacture the chain, the heat treatment of the chain components, the quality of the pitch hole fabrication of the linkplates, and the type of shot plus the intensity of shot peen coverage on the linkplates. Other factors can include the thickness of the linkplates and the design (contour) of the linkplates. The rule of thumb for roller chain operating on a continuous drive is for the chain load to not exceed a mere 1/6 or 1/9 of the chain’s tensile strength, depending on the type of master links used (press-fit vs. slip-fit)[citation needed]. Roller chains operating on a continuous drive beyond these thresholds can and typically do fail prematurely via linkplate fatigue failure.

The standard minimum ultimate strength of the ANSI 29.1 steel chain is 12,500 x (pitch, in inches)2. X-ring and O-Ring chains greatly decrease wear by means of internal lubricants, increasing chain life. The internal lubrication is inserted by means of a vacuum when riveting the chain together.

Standards organizations (such as ANSI and ISO) maintain standards for design, dimensions, and interchangeability of transmission chains. For example, the following Table shows data from ANSI standard B29.1-2011 (Precision Power Transmission Roller Chains, Attachments, and Sprockets) developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). See the references[8][9][10] for additional information.

For mnemonic purposes, below is another presentation of key dimensions from the same standard, expressed in fractions of an inch (which was part of the thinking behind the choice of preferred numbers in the ANSI standard):

Pitch (inches) Pitch expressed

chain number
Width (inches)
14 28 25 18
38 38 35 316
12 48 41 14
12 48 40 516
58 58 50 38
34 68 60 12
1 88 80 58

Notes:
1. The pitch is the distance between roller centers. The width is the distance between the link plates (i.e. slightly more than the roller width to allow for clearance).
2. The right-hand digit of the standard denotes 0 = normal chain, 1 = lightweight chain, 5 = rollerless bushing chain.
3. The left-hand digit denotes the number of eighths of an inch that make up the pitch.
4. An “H” following the standard number denotes heavyweight chain. A hyphenated number following the standard number denotes double-strand (2), triple-strand (3), and so on. Thus 60H-3 denotes number 60 heavyweight triple-strand chain.
A typical bicycle chain (for derailleur gears) uses narrow 1⁄2-inch-pitch chain. The width of the chain is variable, and does not affect the load capacity. The more sprockets at the rear wheel (historically 3-6, nowadays 7-12 sprockets), the narrower the chain. Chains are sold according to the number of speeds they are designed to work with, for example, “10 speed chain”. Hub gear or single speed bicycles use 1/2″ x 1/8″ chains, where 1/8″ refers to the maximum thickness of a sprocket that can be used with the chain.

Typically chains with parallel shaped links have an even number of links, with each narrow link followed by a broad one. Chains built up with a uniform type of link, narrow at 1 and broad at the other end, can be made with an odd number of links, which can be an advantage to adapt to a special chainwheel-distance; on the other side such a chain tends to be not so strong.

Roller chains made using ISO standard are sometimes called as isochains.

Can roller chains be used for overhead or inverted applications?

Roller chains can be used for overhead or inverted applications, but there are certain considerations to keep in mind. Here’s a detailed answer to the question:

1. Lubrication: In overhead or inverted applications, proper lubrication is crucial to ensure smooth operation and prevent premature wear. Gravity can affect the distribution of lubricant within the chain, so it’s important to use a lubrication method that can effectively reach all the critical components.

2. Tensioning: In overhead or inverted applications, the tensioning of the roller chain becomes even more important. The chain should be properly tensioned to prevent sagging or excessive slack, which can lead to uneven load distribution, chain skipping, or disengagement from the sprockets.

3. Environmental Considerations: Overhead or inverted applications may expose the roller chain to environmental factors such as dust, debris, moisture, or temperature variations. It’s important to select a roller chain that is designed to withstand the specific environmental conditions and provides adequate protection against corrosion, contamination, and wear.

4. Sprocket Alignment: Proper sprocket alignment is critical for the smooth operation of roller chains in overhead or inverted applications. Misalignment can result in chain binding, increased friction, and premature wear. Regular inspection and adjustment of the sprocket alignment are necessary to maintain optimal performance.

5. Chain Design: Depending on the specific requirements of the overhead or inverted application, specialized roller chain designs may be available. These designs may include features such as sealed joints, self-lubricating capabilities, or corrosion-resistant coatings to enhance performance and reliability in such applications.

By considering these factors and selecting a roller chain specifically designed for overhead or inverted applications, it is possible to achieve reliable and efficient power transmission in these challenging orientations.

What are the benefits of using a roller chain in material handling systems?

Roller chains offer several benefits when used in material handling systems. Here’s a detailed answer to the question:

1. High Load Capacity: Roller chains are designed to handle heavy loads. They have the strength and durability to support the weight of materials being transported in material handling systems. The multiple contact points provided by the rollers distribute the load evenly, reducing stress concentrations and ensuring efficient load carrying.

2. Reliable Power Transmission: Roller chains provide reliable power transmission in material handling systems. They efficiently transfer power from the motor to the moving components, such as conveyors, lifts, and sorting systems. The precision engineering of roller chains ensures smooth and consistent power transfer, minimizing slippage and maximizing operational efficiency.

3. Flexibility and Versatility: Roller chains are available in various sizes, pitches, and configurations, offering flexibility in design and application. They can be easily adapted to different material handling system layouts and requirements. Roller chains can accommodate both horizontal and vertical movements, making them suitable for a wide range of material handling applications.

4. Durability and Longevity: Roller chains are known for their durability and resistance to wear. They are designed to withstand the demanding operating conditions typically encountered in material handling systems, such as high speeds, heavy loads, and exposure to dust, debris, and contaminants. Proper lubrication and maintenance can further enhance their longevity and reliability.

5. Easy Maintenance: Roller chains are relatively easy to maintain. Regular lubrication and periodic inspection can help ensure smooth operation and detect any signs of wear or damage. Chain tension can be easily adjusted to maintain optimal performance. In the event of chain wear or failure, individual chain links can be replaced, minimizing downtime and maintenance costs.

6. Cost-Effective Solution: Roller chains offer a cost-effective solution for power transmission in material handling systems. They are generally more affordable compared to alternative systems such as belts or gears. Additionally, their durability and longevity reduce the need for frequent replacements, resulting in cost savings over the system’s lifespan.

When selecting a roller chain for a material handling system, factors such as load capacity, speed, environmental conditions, and specific application requirements should be considered. Regular maintenance and inspection are essential to ensure optimal performance and to identify any potential issues that may require attention.

roller chain

What are the signs of roller chain wear and when should it be replaced?

Roller chain wear is a natural occurrence due to the repetitive motion and load-bearing nature of the chain. Recognizing the signs of wear is important to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the chain. Here’s a detailed answer to the question:

1. Elongation: Roller chains can elongate over time due to wear on the pins, bushings, and rollers. To check for elongation, measure the distance between a specific number of links (e.g., 10 or 12) over a known length. If the measured distance exceeds the standard pitch length, it indicates chain elongation and the need for replacement.

2. Chain Slack: Excessive chain slack or sag is another sign of wear. When the chain becomes elongated, it fails to maintain the proper tension, resulting in increased slack. Excessive chain slack can cause poor engagement with sprockets, resulting in skipping or jumping and affecting the overall performance of the chain.

3. Misalignment: As a roller chain wears, it may start to misalign with the sprockets. This misalignment can cause the chain to ride unevenly on the sprocket teeth, leading to accelerated wear on the chain and sprockets. If you notice the chain consistently riding to one side of the sprocket, it may be a sign of wear and misalignment.

4. Chain Noise: Worn roller chains can produce increased noise during operation. Excessive wear on the chain components can cause rattling, clicking, or grinding sounds. Unusual noises should be investigated, as they may indicate significant wear or damage to the chain.

5. Visible Signs of Wear: Inspect the chain visually for signs of wear, such as rust, discoloration, or visible damage to the rollers, pins, or bushings. Excessive wear on these components can affect the chain’s ability to properly engage with the sprockets and transmit power efficiently.

When to replace a roller chain depends on various factors, including the severity of wear, the criticality of the application, and the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is generally recommended to replace a roller chain when it has elongated beyond the allowable limits, exhibits excessive wear, or shows signs of damage that can compromise its performance and safety.

Regular inspection and maintenance of roller chains are essential to identify signs of wear and ensure timely replacement. Replacing the chain at the appropriate time helps prevent unexpected failures, reduces downtime, and maintains the overall efficiency of the machinery or equipment.

Types of roller chains and their applications

There are many factors that can cause premature wear of the roller chain. They include friction, external shocks, and lack of lubrication or adjustment. Here are some tips to help you prevent premature chain wear. Read on to learn more about the different types of roller chains and their applications. You’ll be surprised how quickly the roller chain wears out! Below we have listed some of the most common causes of premature roller chain wear.

Double strand heavy-duty roller chain

If your application requires a heavy-duty chain, a double-strand steel roller chain is an excellent choice. Double-strand steel roller chains are manufactured to reduce stress fatigue and stretch, making them ideal for industrial and logging equipment. This type of chain is also heat-treated and shot-peened for excellent fatigue resistance and strength. Listed below are some of the advantages of double-strand heavy-duty roller chains.
When comparing single-strand and double-strand heavy-duty roller chains, double-strand steel roller chains are generally better. They have twice as many side plates and a working load close to that of a twin-strand steel roller chain. Unlike single-strand steel roller chains, double-strand roller chains are not interchangeable with standard double-sprockets. They use sprockets specially made for double chains.
Double strand chains are particularly strong, resistant to rust and corrosion, and ideal for high-stress applications. They are commonly used in conveyor systems, paper mill equipment, ditches, lifts, seed drills, and various hoisting machinery. They are also used in the wastewater and food processing industries. Chains of this type are used on conveyor lines, so they are an excellent choice for heavy machinery.

Nickel-plated chain

Nickel-plated roller chains are ideal for outdoor work, mildly corrosive environments, and applications requiring a good chain appearance. Nickel plating increases component hardness and improves wear resistance while ensuring that all surfaces are protected. The benefits of nickel-plated roller chains include increased durability, corrosion resistance, and a bright shine. Here are a few reasons to use such a chain. All chains are manufactured to the highest quality and safety standards.
Although slightly corrosive, nickel-plated roller chains are ideal for applications in high salt and high humidity environments. However, nickel plating can peel and chip, so nickel roller chains are not recommended for use in food processing or other environments exposed to corrosive substances. ANSI B29.1 standard chain can be nickel-plated and is ideal for a variety of applications including industrial garage doors and boat lifts.
CZPT USA Corp. is committed to being the premier agricultural and industrial chain supplier in the United States. By focusing on quality, they ensure their chains provide long life and unmatched wear resistance. If you’re looking for a quality plated roller chain, consider choosing a chain from a leading manufacturer. If you need the durability and strength of a nickel roller chain, choose CZPT USA Corp. We manufacture the highest quality chains in the USA.
In addition to high strength, nickel-plated roller chains are also available in elastomer profiles. These types of chains can handle 1/2 to 3/4″ loads, depending on their pitch. They are also ideal for gentle traction on sensitive surfaces. The strength of these chains depends on the type of the main link used in the chain. Nickel-plated roller chains are available in a variety of sizes and are priced to suit a variety of applications.

Stainless steel chain

Stainless steel roller chains are ideal for industrial applications in two harsh environments. They have excellent chemical and corrosion resistance, as well as high strength. Chains are available in three grades to meet various operational needs. 304SS is suitable for food contact applications, while 316SS and 606SS offer excellent corrosion resistance. 600 series stainless steel provides excellent corrosion and wears resistance with precipitation hardened components.
In food processing, stainless steel chains are often exposed to extremely high temperatures and high concentrations of acids, alkalis, and water. They are also resistant to high concentrations of acid and chlorine. And their low magnetic permeability allows them to function properly in hygienic conditions. But stainless steel roller chains also have some disadvantages. Despite their excellent corrosion resistance, these chains are not recommended for use in food processing environments.
Compared to carbon steel, stainless steel roller chains are softer and hold longer. This means it may wear out faster. Since stainless steel is not heat-treated, its surface hardness is different from carbon steel. It retains heat for longer, reducing its tensile strength and extending its lifespan. Nonetheless, stainless steel roller chains are ideal for a variety of industrial applications.
The stainless steel roller chain is made of high-quality material. For example, the Premier series stainless steel roller chains are manufactured in Japan using a special type of stainless steel shot peening process. They also feature a solid roller design that reduces side flex. The Premier range also features highly polished side panels and is available in 10′ boxes, 50′ reels, and 100′ reels. They can also be cut to length if necessary.

Accumulation conveyor

Roller chain accumulation conveyors are designed to transport loads up to 440 lbs or 200 kg. The accumulator chain is located on large idler rollers to ensure quiet operation and the minimum force required to hold the pallet. They are suitable for various applications and can be integrated into the entire processing system. These conveyor belts have T-slots on three sides of the profile frame for connecting brackets and sensors.
Sensors installed in the accumulation area detect objects on the conveyor line and send signals to the motors that power the accumulation area. The motor can be external or built into the drum itself. Other types of sensors use light, such as photosensors. Photoelectric sensors detect objects by emitting and receiving specific wavelengths of light. This option is cost-effective because the sensor rollers are located slightly above the surface of the conveyor line.
Roller chain accumulation conveyors can be constructed of steel or plastic rollers. It can be equipped with staggered or coaxial rollers. Safety cover prevents accidental insertion of fingers into the chain, improving operator safety. The safety cover is compatible with the chain type and required bend radius. These caps are made of plastic clips that fit permanently on the inner links of the chain. They do not interfere with conveyed goods or workpiece carriers.
There are two basic types of accumulation conveyors: free flow and accumulation. Free-flowing chains allow conveyed objects to slide directly onto the chain while stacking chains allow goods to slide under the chain. Accumulation chains are commonly used in the food and packaging industries and have rollers that support conveyed objects. The free-flowing conveyor system eliminates the risk of damaging objects, as the rollers in the accumulation conveyor are in direct contact with the bottom of the cargo.

Custom attachment

Standard accessories for roller chains are available in a variety of styles. Typically, they can be assembled on pin or roller links. When referring to connecting chains, it is important to know how to refer to pitch and center-to-center spacing. The pitch of the roller chain should include inner and outer roller links and must alternate every three pitches. Additionally, you can order custom accessories for pin or roller linkages. Below are some examples of custom accessories for roller chains.
Stainless steel roller chains are one of the most well-known chains for this application. It has a stainless steel 304 finish to create curved and straight lugs. How to choose a roller chain for a conveyor

When choosing a roller chain for your conveyor, the easiest way is to refer to the horsepower and RPM charts. The horsepower and rpm of the small drive sprocket will determine the size and number of teeth of the chain. Conveyor chains are available in a variety of options, including moving products horizontally, vertically, or around a bend radius. When choosing a conveyor chain, consider the purpose of the chain. For example, if you’re delivering products to customers’ doorsteps, you might choose chains that can move products up and down a hallway or warehouse.

Double pitch

Double pitch roller chains are a popular way to drive agricultural equipment. It has twice the pitch of a standard roller chain and is ideal for light-duty drives. Extended pitch increases performance at lower speeds, but requires fewer components per foot than standard single-pitch chains. Compared to single-pitch roller chains, double-pitch chainplates are longer and are suitable for lighter loads. Read on to learn more about double pitch chains and how they can improve your operation.
The most common type of conveyor chain is double pitch. It is used in the auto parts industry, as well as in the precision machinery industry. It is made from the same components as the standard drive roller chain, except it has longer side plates. Double pitch chains are often used on slow-moving conveyors to reduce the stress placed on them. Industries that commonly use double pitch conveyor chains include airport equipment manufacturers, lumber mills, and fruit packing plants.
RS series roller chains are manufactured from high-quality stainless steel. It has excellent chemical and abrasion resistance and is available in a variety of cord lengths. RS sprockets have over 30 teeth. They contain all the necessary connection links for easy installation. PEER Chain offers double pitch roller chain attachments including pre-stretched chains, sprockets, and other attachments.
Double pitch roller chains have several advantages over standard chains. Double pitch chains have double the pitch, making them ideal for conveying applications such as conveyors. In addition to that, it also provides ANSI-compliant styles. These chains also have free connection links. When shopping for a double pitch roller chain, be sure to choose the one that fits your requirements and budget. They will last longer and save you money in the long run.
Double pitch roller chains to ANSI standards feature oversized rollers. These chains are best suited for applications where the product is mounted on top of the chain. They are ideal for agricultural applications where cotton is on top of the drum. Also, this type of chain is used in light-duty conveyors and agricultural applications. You can find double pitch roller chains in a variety of sizes and styles. And, as long as you know what you want, you’ll be happy with the results.

Self-lubricating

Self-lubricating roller chains eliminate the need for manual relubrication, providing long-lasting operation and reducing maintenance costs. These chains are particularly popular in industries such as the food and beverage industry, textiles, printing, and sawmills. They can also replace standard roller chain drives and conveyor chains. Manufactured to the specific standard ISO R606, these chains are ideal replacements for conventional chains. PC chains are particularly beneficial for food and beverage production and packaging applications due to their anti-corrosion properties.
Self-lubricating roller chains meet ISO, ASME/ANSI, and DIN standards. They are interchangeable with standard chains of the same size and shape and can be used in a variety of industrial applications. Self-lubricating chains have special oil-impregnated sleeves to reduce maintenance time. These chains are also suitable for applications where cleanliness is an issue.
Self-lubricating roller chains are manufactured with unique RS attachments. Rather than a traditional roller chain with an external lubricating ring, this type of chain retains the lubricant within its bushings. During operation, the application generates heat, heating the lubricant, which flows out of the pin and bushing area. Therefore, CZPT roller chains are ideal for certain food conveying applications.
In addition to self-lubricating roller chains, carbon steel, stainless steel or nickel-plated steel are also available. Self-lubricating roller chains are available in different sizes depending on the application, including 0.375″ wide profile straight-chain, extended pin chain, and four-link. In addition, these chains are also available in ANSI and BS chain specifications.

Accumulation

Whether you need to move large or small loads, accumulating roller chains are a viable solution. This chain conveyor is designed with low back pressure to transport large and bulky items with minimal noise. Free-running rollers within the chain help create a smooth build-up surface. These chains are available in a variety of options, including accumulating rollers of different pitches.
The accumulation and release roller chain 14 includes an upper part 15 and a lower part 16. The upper part 15 rests in the upper subspace 28, while the lower part 16 rests on the top side 20 of the profile. As the upper belt 15 rolls around the accumulation roller chain 14, it aligns with the lower chain 16 to form a continuous receiving space. This arrangement allows the accumulation roller chain 14 to rest on the top surface of the support profile 11.
A cumulative roller chain consists of many individual parts. Each section of the chain has an elongated cylindrical shape and is connected to each other by hinged joints. Each chain section also has an accumulation and release roller associated therewith. Each roller protrudes from the upper side 20 and the lower side 21 of the chain portion. The accumulation rollers are movable about an axis 22 extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of the chain.
A feature of the stacking and releasing roller chain is its simplicity. The conveyor has a profiled section that is permanently divided into two cross-sectional spaces. The bottom space is closed from all sides. The upper space accommodates the conveyor line. The contoured portion includes an opening that guides the bottom strap. A shunt can also be inserted between the two sections. The accumulating roller chain system is a convenient and versatile way to move bulky items.
There are many different types of accumulating roller chains. Some chains have offset rollers for optimal load distribution. Others have protection to prevent machine wear. Some run without lubricant, which is a safety advantage. In addition to protection, cumulative chains can also provide protection. The side bow version of the accumulation and release roller chain with offset accumulation and release rollers is designed for conveyor systems with very small bend radii.
chain

Without bushing

Bushless roller chains are the most common type of industrial chain. They are simple in design and require only regular maintenance. Regular maintenance includes lubricating, assessing wear, and replacing worn sprockets. For more information, please read the following information:
The outer chainplates and the inner chain plates are alternately arranged in pairs. The connecting pin extends through the hole in the inner link plate. The rollers thus positioned can be rotated on the connecting pins. Oil provided between the outer circumferential surfaces of each connecting pin serves to lubricate the chain. This system reduces noise and wears caused by collisions between inner chain plates and sprockets.
Compared to traditional roller chains, bushings roller chains have rollers around the bushing. These rollers are in rolling contact with the sprocket teeth, providing low friction and excellent wear resistance. To ensure smooth operation, bushings roller chains must be greased to prevent rust and keep the chain properly tensioned. Lubricated chains run smoother and last longer.
In a bushingless chain, the inner links are shaped like half bushings and ride on the rollers. The pins go through the outer plate and connect the inner links to the rollers. The outer plates overlap the inner links and open the pins. This system is also known as a heterochain. This type of chain is more common than traditional roller chains. If you are not sure which type of bushingless roller chain to choose, you may need to purchase an additional pair of inner chainplates.
Linerless roller chains may also include chain guides. In a bushingless roller chain, the outer and inner link plates conform to the surfaces of the guide rails. Thus, the large area of contact between the chain and the guide rail is eliminated, the friction loss is reduced, and the power transmission efficiency is improved. These properties make bushless roller chains more efficient and durable than traditional roller chains. It’s also less noisy. If you are looking for a chain with a lower noise level, a bushingless roller chain may be the right choice for you.

How to choose a drive chain

The process of manufacturing a drive chain starts with bushing. Both inner and outer diameters are strictly measured to ensure tight tolerances. The roundness of the bushing is critical as irregular surfaces in the contact area can cause accelerated wear and shorten chain life. That’s why the CZPT manufacturing process is carefully designed to optimize the wear performance of the chain. There are several types of bushings including roller, forged rivetless, flat top, and timing.

roller chain

The tensile strength of a roller chain is the number of pounds it can withstand before breaking. Fatigue strength is equally important, although the two do not necessarily go hand in hand. Fatigue strength depends on several factors, including the quality of steel used in manufacturing, the quality of the pitch holes, the type of shot peening used, and the thickness and design of the link plates. Here are some things to consider when choosing a roller chain for a drive chain.
When sizing a chain, first determine how much power will be delivered. Then, determine how many teeth you need for the drive sprocket. The gear ratio is approximately 2:1. The number of sprocket teeth depends on the size of the motor. A chain with a higher tooth count requires fewer teeth than a smaller chain. The size of the drive sprocket also depends on the horsepower of the motor.
Before installing rollers or conveyor chains, make sure the drive system is properly aligned. If the drive chain is misaligned, the load on other components will be uneven. This can cause excessive wear on the sprocket or roller chain. Also, check that the sprocket is as close to the bearing as possible. Connecting links can be secured using openings or spring clips.
Different manufacturing processes can affect the performance of the roller chain. Some manufacturers have chains pre-installed at the factory to minimize initial stretch. Others build chains by preloading sprockets and ensuring consistent precision heat treatment. The final product may have greater elongation or less wear than previous products. It is best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to extend the life of the roller chain. If you are interested in purchasing a new drive chain, please contact a trusted supplier in your area.

Drop forged rivetless chain

Forged rivetless drive chains are ideal for applications where flexibility and strength are critical. The chain consists of forged steel components for high strength and lightweight. These chain assemblies are easy to assemble without the use of tools and are commonly used on carts, assembly lines, and drag conveyors. They are also compatible with related chain, drive, and accessory products. They have a short turning radius and therefore high flexibility and strength.
The X-348 Forged Rivetless Chain is an example of such a drive chain. This chain is perfect for automated machines that run late at night. It is available in a variety of weight limits and sizes. The chain is pre-stressed after assembly, and a two-year parts replacement warranty is standard. Its durability is also enhanced by the inclusion of push dogs that engage the front floating dogs on the leading free cart.
In addition to this type of chain, CZPT also offers a full line of Caterpillar Drive chains. They are designed to provide fatigue-free operation. The drive jaws are one-piece forged induction hardened steel compatible with forged rivetless chains. There are many special custom chains to choose from. These forged chains can be installed on Caterpillars as well as other types of tractors for maximum durability and efficiency.
Distributors of forged chain products offer a variety of sizes, pitches, and materials for material handling and conveying systems. Typically, this type of chain is used in conveyor and lifting applications and ranges from 3 inches to 9 inches. Depending on size and thickness, it is ideal for a variety of industries including automotive, food, paper, and steel mills. In addition, the chain is corrosion-resistant and corrosion-free.

flat top chain

The flat-top drive chain is used for conveying large and medium workpiece pallets. These chains are available in a variety of materials and designs, including plastic, steel, and stainless steel. The steel flat top chain provides high wear resistance and excellent noise reduction. Steel flat-top chains are suitable for applications requiring high loads and excellent workmanship. HD profiles are compatible with steel flat-top chains and are highly recommended for extreme applications.
CZPT produces two types of flat-top chains. Tabletop chains are similar to wing door hinges, while MatTop chains are assembled using full-width pins. Both types are available in standard widths of 3.25 to 12 inches and are shipped in 10-foot sections. Both types can be shaped according to the width of the chain.
Double hinge pin flat-top chains are available with a variety of hinge pins. There are TAB and standard hinge pins for different machines and drive methods. A flat-top chain with dual-hinge pins will provide higher load carrying capacity, but be aware of the hinge pin size and style required for your application. The hinge pins should be long enough to ensure a smooth and smooth delivery. Double hinge pin flat top drive chains are available in a variety of sizes and designs.
Using standardized components and modules, the flat-top chain conveyor system is highly adaptable and can be seamlessly integrated into any production process. It can also be extended to handle a wider range of containers. Using a single drive, the CZPT system can be extended to a length of 40 meters. Its versatility makes it the choice of many industries. There is also a wide variety of flat-top drive chains to choose from.

time chain

The drive chain is a critical component of any internal combustion engine. They transmit the rotation of the crankshaft to the camshaft via the timing chain. These chains have been standard in cars since the turn of the 20th century, and while toothed belts have become a more cost-effective alternative, manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW remain loyal to traditional chain drives.
Timing chains come in many shapes and sizes, with different designs depending on the type of load they must carry. Roller chains are the most common and offer an excellent balance of strength and NVH performance. Its design is similar to a bicycle chain, and the inner link consists of two blades pressed into the holes of the sprocket. Roller chains can also pass through smaller diameter sprockets, and roller chains take up less space than chain links.
The length of the chain allows it to stretch over time. In addition, improper oil maintenance can lead to premature timing chain damage. Without an oil change, the chain is not lubricated, causing the rollers and links to rub against each other. This can cause excessive chain wear and eventually chain breakage. To avoid premature timing chain failure, it is advisable to have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic.
For automotive timing chains, the CZPT website offers the best prices for the timing chain you need. You can find the right timing chain for your car by registering on this website. You can also contact a mechanic to get the parts you need. If you don’t know how to diagnose your timing mechanism, you can always check the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s website. It is critical to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid catastrophic failure.

Oil-impregnated bushing

Oil-impregnated bushings for drive chains are an excellent solution to drive chain lubrication problems. Usually, drive chains require additional lubrication, but by adding special oil-impregnated bushings, the chain can run without lubrication. Oil-immersed bushings, such as those of the CZPT brand for CZPT, are specially manufactured for this purpose. They capture oil during operation and release it onto the bearing surfaces, returning it to the bushing by capillary action.
Since their introduction to the automotive industry, engineered composite plastic bushings have been shown to provide longer service life and save up to 40% in maintenance costs. They have replaced bronze in thousands of applications, including pumps, medical equipment, and food processing machinery. Because oil-impregnated bronze bearings rely on capillary action, they must rotate to maintain a complete lubricating film. However, several factors prevent this film from fully forming, including low speeds and intermittent use.
During the manufacturing process, oil-impregnated bushings are manufactured to meet the wear resistance requirements of the drive chain. The sintered density of the oil-impregnated sintered bushing determines its mechanical strength. The larger sintered density increases the wear resistance of the oil-impregnated bushing but reduces the mechanical strength.
Whether or not a drive chain is lubricated will determine its overall life. Proper lubrication can extend chain life by 100% compared to a chain without proper lubrication. Proper lubrication means using high-quality oils without additives and oils that flow freely at prevailing temperatures. Indirect heating is required by immersing the drive chain in the molten pool as certain additives prevent oil from entering the chain joint.
